About Us

In 2001, the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Agricultural Research released a P 5M institutional grant to VSU. The grant was used to upgrade the facilities of the Analytical Services Laboratory (ASL) of PhilRootcrops, particularly for the purchase of vital laboratory equipment such as atomic absorption spectrometer, gas chromatograph, water analyzer, protein digestion system, and a fume hood. ASL was then converted into the Central Analytical Services Laboratory (CASL), now one of the central support services units for RD and E attached to the Office of the Director of Research and Extension Programs Office of VSU. It formally started its operation in June 2002. CASL now occupies the entire second level of the west wing of the PhilRootcrops complex.

CASL facilities are envisioned to provide reliable analytical services to researchers, technicians, entrepreneurs, farmers, local government units and other interested individuals of the Visayas and CARAGA regions.

Capabilities of the Laboratory

a. Instrumentation

Major pieces of equipment include an atomic absorption spectrometer, gas chromatograph, UV-VIS spectrophotometer, water analyzer, balances, protein digestion system, fat extractor, centrifuge, pH meter, drying ovens, muffle furnace, steam distillation units and other assorted supporting laboratory equipment.

b. Capability

The laboratory is a university approved service center providing routine and special analyses for a variety of sample matrices such as soil, soil extracts, plant tissue, plant tissue extracts, water, compost, and organic materials.

c. Quality Control

To ensure the accuracy and precision of results, CASL follows quality control/quality assurance guidelines. Check and reference samples are used daily to maintain a quality control for soil and plant samples.
