A new generation of eager learners from Capiz State University, composed of 13 students with 4 majoring in Soil Science and 9 in Agronomy—roots invaluable and practical knowledge for their On-the-Job Training (OJT) at the VSU Philippine Root Crop Research and Training Center (PhilRootcrops). This month-long immersive training entails the bridging of classroom learning with real-life practical and onsite applications, allowing hands-on experience to gain a deep understanding of root crop science and development.

This newly established collaboration provides diverse exposure of students towards laboratory and experimental farms of tissue culture propagation, pest and disease management, and post-harvest processing. Working closely with researchers and technicians, this hands-on learning advances not only technical knowledge but further emphasizes the importance of research and innovation in rootcrops with the use of agri-science-based solutions.
“With PhilRootcrops being vital to sustainability in root and tuber crops, it very much aligns with our field of study and can help further solidify our career interest through experience in different agricultural aspects and discover new areas of interest. We aim to contribute in ensuring not only sustainability in agriculture but also in the development of rootcrop science in the region.” Angel Rose Layos, 3rd year BSA Major in Soil Science - CapSU

This collaboration proves to highlight the alignment of goals between VSU, VSU PhilRootcrops, and CapSU in their capacity-building efforts to produce competent agriculturists to meet evolving challenges in root crop production and security.

Following the completion of orientation, the students now concentrate on their field demonstration at various planting sites of the center to further develop their propagation and cultivation skills on different root crop varieties. The students will then conclude their training this August 2025.
